Red Hat: CVE-2024-26962: kernel: dm-raid456, md/raid456: fix a deadlock for dm-raid456 while io concurrent with reshape (Multiple Advisories)
Red Hat: CVE-2024-26962: kernel: dm-raid456, md/raid456: fix a deadlock for dm-raid456 while io concurrent with reshape (Multiple Advisories) Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 12/06/2024 Added 12/05/2024 Modified 12/05/2024 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm-raid456, md/raid456: fix a deadlock for dm-raid456 while io concurrent with reshape For raid456, if reshape is still in progress, then IO across reshape position will wait for reshape to make progress. However, for dm-raid, in following cases reshape will never make progress hence IO will hang: 1) the array is read-only; 2) MD_RECOVERY_WAIT is set; 3) MD_RECOVERY_FROZEN is set; After commit c467e97f079f ("md/raid6: use valid sector values to determine if an I/O should wait on the reshape") fix the problem that IO across reshape position doesn't wait for reshape, the dm-raid test shell/lvconvert-raid-reshape.sh start to hang: [root@fedora ~]# cat /proc/979/stack [<0>] wait_woken+0x7d/0x90 [<0>] raid5_make_request+0x929/0x1d70 [raid456] [<0>] md_handle_request+0xc2/0x3b0 [md_mod] [<0>] raid_map+0x2c/0x50 [dm_raid] [<0>] __map_bio+0x251/0x380 [dm_mod] [<0>] dm_submit_bio+0x1f0/0x760 [dm_mod] [<0>] __submit_bio+0xc2/0x1c0 [<0>] submit_bio_noacct_nocheck+0x17f/0x450 [<0>] submit_bio_noacct+0x2bc/0x780 [<0>] submit_bio+0x70/0xc0 [<0>] mpage_readahead+0x169/0x1f0 [<0>] blkdev_readahead+0x18/0x30 [<0>] read_pages+0x7c/0x3b0 [<0>] page_cache_ra_unbounded+0x1ab/0x280 [<0>] force_page_cache_ra+0x9e/0x130 [<0>] page_cache_sync_ra+0x3b/0x110 [<0>] filemap_get_pages+0x143/0xa30 [<0>] filemap_read+0xdc/0x4b0 [<0>] blkdev_read_iter+0x75/0x200 [<0>] vfs_read+0x272/0x460 [<0>] ksys_read+0x7a/0x170 [<0>] __x64_sys_read+0x1c/0x30 [<0>] do_syscall_64+0xc6/0x230 [<0>] entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x6c/0x74 This is because reshape can't make progress. For md/raid, the problem doesn't exist because register new sync_thread doesn't rely on the IO to be done any more: 1) If array is read-only, it can switch to read-write by ioctl/sysfs; 2) md/raid never set MD_RECOVERY_WAIT; 3) If MD_RECOVERY_FROZEN is set, mddev_suspend() doesn't hold 'reconfig_mutex', hence it can be cleared and reshape can continue by sysfs api 'sync_action'. However, I'm not sure yet how to avoid the problem in dm-raid yet. This patch on the one hand make sure raid_message() can't change sync_thread() through raid_message() after presuspend(), on the other hand detect the above 3 cases before wait for IO do be done in dm_suspend(), and let dm-raid requeue those IO. We could prevent from that race by serializing i915_active_fini() with __active_retire() via ref->tree_lock, but that wouldn't stop the VMA from being used, e.g. from __i915_vma_retire() called at the end of __active_retire(), after that VMA has been already freed by a concurrent i915_vma_destroy() on return from the i915_active_fini().Then, we should rather fix the issue at the VMA level, not in i915_active. Since __i915_vma_parked() is called from __gt_park() on last put of the GT's wakeref, the issue could be addressed by holding the GT wakeref long enough for __active_retire() to complete before that wakeref is released and the GT parked. I believe the issue was introduced by commit d93939730347 ("drm/i915: Remove the vma refcount") which moved a call to i915_active_fini() from a dropped i915_vma_release(), called on last put of the removed VMA kref, to i915_vma_parked() processing path called on last put of a GT wakeref. However, its visibility to the object debugging tool was suppressed by a bug in i915_active that was fixed two weeks later with commit e92eb246feb9 ("drm/i915/active: Fix missing debug object activation"). A VMA associated with a request doesn't acquire a GT wakeref by itself. Instead, it depends on a wakeref held directly by the request's active intel_context for a GT associated with its VM, and indirectly on that intel_context's engine wakeref if the engine belongs to the same GT as the VMA's VM.Those wakerefs are released asynchronously to VMA deactivation. Fix the issue by getting a wakeref for the VMA's GT when activating it, and putting that wakeref only after the VMA is deactivated. However, exclude global GTT from that processing path, otherwise the GPU never goes idle.Since __i915_vma_retire() may be called from atomic contexts, use async variant of wakeref put. Also, to avoid circular locking dependency, take care of acquiring the wakeref before VM mutex when both are needed. v7: Add inline comments with justifications for: - using untracked variants of intel_gt_pm_get/put() (Nirmoy), - using async variant of _put(), - not getting the wakeref in case of a global GTT, - always getting the first wakeref outside vm->mutex. v6: Since __i915_vma_active/retire() callbacks are not serialized, storing a wakeref tracking handle inside struct i915_vma is not safe, and there is no other good place for that.Use untracked variants of intel_gt_pm_get/put_async(). v5: Replace "tile" with "GT" across commit description (Rodrigo), - ---truncated--- Solution(s) rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-core rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug-core rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug-debuginfo rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug-devel rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug-kvm rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug-modules rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debug-modules-extra rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debuginfo rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-debuginfo-common-x86_64 rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-devel rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-kvm rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-modules rocky-upgrade-kernel-rt-modules-extra References https://attackerkb.com/topics/cve-2024-26939 CVE - 2024-26939 https://errata.rockylinux.org/RLSA-2024:7001

Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26933): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26933): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 01/30/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: core: Fix deadlock in port "disable" sysfs attribute The show and store callback routines for the "disable" sysfs attribute file in port.c acquire the device lock for the port's parent hub device. This can cause problems if another process has locked the hub to remove it or change its configuration: Removing the hub or changing its configuration requires the hub interface to be removed, which requires the port device to be removed, and device_del() waits until all outstanding sysfs attribute callbacks for the ports have returned. The lock can't be released until then. But the disable_show() or disable_store() routine can't return until after it has acquired the lock. The resulting deadlock can be avoided by calling sysfs_break_active_protection().This will cause the sysfs core not to wait for the attribute's callback routine to return, allowing the removal to proceed. The disadvantage is that after making this call, there is no guarantee that the hub structure won't be deallocated at any moment. To prevent this, we have to acquire a reference to it first by calling hub_get(). Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26937): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26937): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 4 CVSS (AV:L/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 09/20/2024 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/i915/gt: Reset queue_priority_hint on parking Originally, with strict in order execution, we could complete execution only when the queue was empty. Preempt-to-busy allows replacement of an active request that may complete before the preemption is processed by HW. If that happens, the request is retired from the queue, but the queue_priority_hint remains set, preventing direct submission until after the next CS interrupt is processed. This preempt-to-busy race can be triggered by the heartbeat, which will also act as the power-management barrier and upon completion allow us to idle the HW. We may process the completion of the heartbeat, and begin parking the engine before the CS event that restores the queue_priority_hint, causing us to fail the assertion that it is MIN. <3>[166.210729] Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26934): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26934): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 01/30/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: core: Fix deadlock in usb_deauthorize_interface() Among the attribute file callback routines in drivers/usb/core/sysfs.c, the interface_authorized_store() function is the only one which acquires a device lock on an ancestor device: It calls usb_deauthorize_interface(), which locks the interface's parent USB device. The will lead to deadlock if another process already owns that lock and tries to remove the interface, whether through a configuration change or because the device has been disconnected. As part of the removal procedure, device_del() waits for all ongoing sysfs attribute callbacks to complete. But usb_deauthorize_interface() can't complete until the device lock has been released, and the lock won't be released until the removal has finished. The mechanism provided by sysfs to prevent this kind of deadlock is to use the sysfs_break_active_protection() function, which tells sysfs not to wait for the attribute callback. Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26943): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26943): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 4 CVSS (AV:L/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 07/15/2024 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nouveau/dmem: handle kcalloc() allocation failure The kcalloc() in nouveau_dmem_evict_chunk() will return null if the physical memory has run out. As a result, if we dereference src_pfns, dst_pfns or dma_addrs, the null pointer dereference bugs will happen. Moreover, the GPU is going away. If the kcalloc() fails, we could not evict all pages mapping a chunk. So this patch adds a __GFP_NOFAIL flag in kcalloc(). Finally, as there is no need to have physically contiguous memory, this patch switches kcalloc() to kvcalloc() in order to avoid failing allocations. Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26960): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26960): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 4 CVSS (AV:L/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 11/20/2024 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm: swap: fix race between free_swap_and_cache() and swapoff() There was previously a theoretical window where swapoff() could run and teardown a swap_info_struct while a call to free_swap_and_cache() was running in another thread. This could cause, amongst other bad possibilities, swap_page_trans_huge_swapped() (called by free_swap_and_cache()) to access the freed memory for swap_map. This is a theoretical problem and I haven't been able to provoke it from a test case. But there has been agreement based on code review that this is possible (see link below). Fix it by using get_swap_device()/put_swap_device(), which will stall swapoff().There was an extra check in _swap_info_get() to confirm that the swap entry was not free. This isn't present in get_swap_device() because it doesn't make sense in general due to the race between getting the reference and swapoff. So I've added an equivalent check directly in free_swap_and_cache(). Details of how to provoke one possible issue (thanks to David Hildenbrand for deriving this): --8<----- __swap_entry_free() might be the last user and result in "count == SWAP_HAS_CACHE". swapoff->try_to_unuse() will stop as soon as soon as si->inuse_pages==0. So the question is: could someone reclaim the folio and turn si->inuse_pages==0, before we completed swap_page_trans_huge_swapped(). Imagine the following: 2 MiB folio in the swapcache. Only 2 subpages are still references by swap entries. Process 1 still references subpage 0 via swap entry. Process 2 still references subpage 1 via swap entry. Process 1 quits. Calls free_swap_and_cache(). -> count == SWAP_HAS_CACHE [then, preempted in the hypervisor etc.] Process 2 quits. Calls free_swap_and_cache(). -> count == SWAP_HAS_CACHE Process 2 goes ahead, passes swap_page_trans_huge_swapped(), and calls __try_to_reclaim_swap(). __try_to_reclaim_swap()->folio_free_swap()->delete_from_swap_cache()-> put_swap_folio()->free_swap_slot()->swapcache_free_entries()-> swap_entry_free()->swap_range_free()-> ... WRITE_ONCE(si->inuse_pages, si->inuse_pages - nr_entries); What stops swapoff to succeed after process 2 reclaimed the swap cache but before process1 finished its call to swap_page_trans_huge_swapped()? --8<----- Solution(s) ubuntu-upgrade-linux-image-4-15-0-1136-oracle ubuntu-upgrade-linux-image-4-15-0-1157-kvm ubuntu-upgrade-linux-image-4-15-0-1167-gcp Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26962): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26962): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 01/30/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm-raid456, md/raid456: fix a deadlock for dm-raid456 while io concurrent with reshape For raid456, if reshape is still in progress, then IO across reshape position will wait for reshape to make progress. Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26988): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-26988): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 4 CVSS (AV:L/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/12/2024 Added 07/12/2024 Modified 09/20/2024 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: init/main.c: Fix potential static_command_line memory overflow We allocate memory of size 'xlen + strlen(boot_command_line) + 1' for static_command_line, but the strings copied into static_command_line are extra_command_line and command_line, rather than extra_command_line and boot_command_line. When strlen(command_line) > strlen(boot_command_line), static_command_line will overflow. Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-27018): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-27018): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/12/2024 Added 07/12/2024 Modified 01/28/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: br_netfilter: skip conntrack input hook for promisc packets For historical reasons, when bridge device is in promisc mode, packets that are directed to the taps follow bridge input hook path. This patch adds a workaround to reset conntrack for these packets. Jianbo Liu reports warning splats in their test infrastructure where cloned packets reach the br_netfilter input hook to confirm the conntrack object. Scratch one bit from BR_INPUT_SKB_CB to annotate that this packet has reached the input hook because it is passed up to the bridge device to reach the taps. Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-27015): Linux kernel vulnerabilities
Ubuntu: (Multiple Advisories) (CVE-2024-27015): Linux kernel vulnerabilities Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 07/12/2024 Added 07/12/2024 Modified 01/28/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: flowtable: incorrect pppoe tuple pppoe traffic reaching ingress path does not match the flowtable entry because the pppoe header is expected to be at the network header offset. Oracle Linux: CVE-2024-26973: ELSA-2024-3618:kernel update (MODERATE) (Multiple Advisories) Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 05/01/2024 Created 06/07/2024 Added 06/06/2024 Modified 01/23/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fat: fix uninitialized field in nostale filehandles When fat_encode_fh_nostale() encodes file handle without a parent it stores only first 10 bytes of the file handle. However the length of the file handle must be a multiple of 4 so the file handle is actually 12 bytes long and the last two bytes remain uninitialized. This is not great at we potentially leak uninitialized information with the handle to userspace. Properly initialize the full handle length.
