1. SUSE: CVE-2023-52483: SUSE Linux Security Advisory Severity 7 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:C/I:C/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 06/24/2024 Added 06/24/2024 Modified 01/28/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mctp: perform route lookups under a RCU read-side lock Our current route lookups (mctp_route_lookup and mctp_route_lookup_null) traverse the net's route list without the RCU read lock held. This means the route lookup is subject to preemption, resulting in an potential grace period expiry, and so an eventual kfree() while we still have the route pointer. Add the proper read-side critical section locks around the route lookups, preventing premption and a possible parallel kfree. The remaining net->mctp.routes accesses are already under a rcu_read_lock, or protected by the RTNL for updates. Based on an analysis from Sili Luo <[email protected]>, where introducing a delay in the route lookup could cause a UAF on simultaneous sendmsg() and route deletion. 6. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2023-52486: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 4 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:M/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 02/14/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm: Don't unref the same fb many times by mistake due to deadlock handling If we get a deadlock after the fb lookup in drm_mode_page_flip_ioctl() we proceed to unref the fb and then retry the whole thing from the top. But we forget to reset the fb pointer back to NULL, and so if we then get another error during the retry, before the fb lookup, we proceed the unref the same fb again without having gotten another reference. The end result is that the fb will (eventually) end up being freed while it's still in use. Reset fb to NULL once we've unreffed it to avoid doing it again until we've done another fb lookup. This turned out to be pretty easy to hit on a DG2 when doing async flips (and CONFIG_DEBUG_WW_MUTEX_SLOWPATH=y). The first symptom I saw that drm_closefb() simply got stuck in a busy loop while walking the framebuffer list. Fortunately I was able to convince it to oops instead, and from there it was easier to track down the culprit. A flaw was found in the Linux kernel. A frame buffer can be freed while still in use in a specific situation in drivers/gpu/drm/drm_plane.c. This issue may compromise the availability. 10. Alma Linux: CVE-2023-52476: Important: kernel security update (Multiple Advisories) Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 09/27/2024 Added 09/26/2024 Modified 01/30/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: perf/x86/lbr: Filter vsyscall addresses We found that a panic can occur when a vsyscall is made while LBR sampling is active. If the vsyscall is interrupted (NMI) for perf sampling, this call sequence can occur (most recent at top): __insn_get_emulate_prefix() insn_get_emulate_prefix() insn_get_prefixes() insn_get_opcode() decode_branch_type() get_branch_type() intel_pmu_lbr_filter() intel_pmu_handle_irq() perf_event_nmi_handler() Within __insn_get_emulate_prefix() at frame 0, a macro is called: peek_nbyte_next(insn_byte_t, insn, i) Within this macro, this dereference occurs: (insn)->next_byte Inspecting registers at this point, the value of the next_byte field is the address of the vsyscall made, for example the location of the vsyscall version of gettimeofday() at 0xffffffffff600000. The access to an address in the vsyscall region will trigger an oops due to an unhandled page fault. To fix the bug, filtering for vsyscalls can be done when determining the branch type. This patch will return a "none" branch if a kernel address if found to lie in the vsyscall region. The trivial increase in the dimension of bw40_base fails as this struct must match the layout of efuse. The fix is to add the rate as an argument to rtw_get_channel_group() and set the group for channel 14 to 4 if rate <= DESC_RATE11M. 13. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2023-52489: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 02/14/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/sparsemem: fix race in accessing memory_section->usage The below race is observed on a PFN which falls into the device memory region with the system memory configuration where PFN's are such that [ZONE_NORMAL ZONE_DEVICE ZONE_NORMAL].Since normal zone start and end pfn contains the device memory PFN's as well, the compaction triggered will try on the device memory PFN's too though they end up in NOP(because pfn_to_online_page() returns NULL for ZONE_DEVICE memory sections). When from other core, the section mappings are being removed for the ZONE_DEVICE region, that the PFN in question belongs to, on which compaction is currently being operated is resulting into the kernel crash with CONFIG_SPASEMEM_VMEMAP enabled. The crash logs can be seen at [1]. compact_zone()memunmap_pages ---------------------------- __pageblock_pfn_to_page ...... (a)pfn_valid(): valid_section()//return true (b)__remove_pages()-> sparse_remove_section()-> section_deactivate(): [Free the array ms->usage and set ms->usage = NULL] pfn_section_valid() [Access ms->usage which is NULL] NOTE: From the above it can be said that the race is reduced to between the pfn_valid()/pfn_section_valid() and the section deactivate with SPASEMEM_VMEMAP enabled. The commit b943f045a9af("mm/sparse: fix kernel crash with pfn_section_valid check") tried to address the same problem by clearing the SECTION_HAS_MEM_MAP with the expectation of valid_section() returns false thus ms->usage is not accessed. Fix this issue by the below steps: a) Clear SECTION_HAS_MEM_MAP before freeing the ->usage. b) RCU protected read side critical section will either return NULL when SECTION_HAS_MEM_MAP is cleared or can successfully access ->usage. c) Free the ->usage with kfree_rcu() and set ms->usage = NULL.No attempt will be made to access ->usage after this as the SECTION_HAS_MEM_MAP is cleared thus valid_section() return false. Thanks to David/Pavan for their inputs on this patch. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/[email protected]/ On Snapdragon SoC, with the mentioned memory configuration of PFN's as [ZONE_NORMAL ZONE_DEVICE ZONE_NORMAL], we are able to see bunch of issues daily while testing on a device farm. For this particular issue below is the log.Though the below log is not directly pointing to the pfn_section_valid(){ ms->usage;}, when we loaded this dump on T32 lauterbach tool, it is pointing. 14. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2023-52476: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 02/14/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: perf/x86/lbr: Filter vsyscall addresses We found that a panic can occur when a vsyscall is made while LBR sampling is active. 15. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2023-52498: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 4 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:M/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 02/14/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PM: sleep: Fix possible deadlocks in core system-wide PM code It is reported that in low-memory situations the system-wide resume core code deadlocks, because async_schedule_dev() executes its argument function synchronously if it cannot allocate memory (and not only in that case) and that function attempts to acquire a mutex that is already held.Executing the argument function synchronously from within dpm_async_fn() may also be problematic for ordering reasons (it may cause a consumer device's resume callback to be invoked before a requisite supplier device's one, for example). Address this by changing the code in question to use async_schedule_dev_nocall() for scheduling the asynchronous execution of device suspend and resume functions and to directly run them synchronously if async_schedule_dev_nocall() returns false. A flaw was found in the Linux Kernel. In low-memory situations, there is a possibility of a code deadlock that may lead to a hang. 17. Amazon Linux 2023: CVE-2023-52481: Important priority package update for kernel Severity 6 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:M/C:C/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 02/14/2025 Added 02/14/2025 Modified 02/14/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: arm64: errata: Add Cortex-A520 speculative unprivileged load workaround Implement the workaround for ARM Cortex-A520 erratum 2966298. On an affected Cortex-A520 core, a speculatively executed unprivileged load might leak data from a privileged load via a cache side channel. The issue only exists for loads within a translation regime with the same translation (e.g. same ASID and VMID). Therefore, the issue only affects the return to EL0. The workaround is to execute a TLBI before returning to EL0 after all loads of privileged data. A non-shareable TLBI to any address is sufficient. The workaround isn't necessary if page table isolation (KPTI) is enabled, but for simplicity it will be. Page table isolation should normally be disabled for Cortex-A520 as it supports the CSV3 feature and the E0PD feature (used when KASLR is enabled). Huawei EulerOS: CVE-2023-52477: kernel security update Severity 5 CVSS (AV:L/AC:L/Au:S/C:N/I:N/A:C) Published 02/29/2024 Created 07/02/2024 Added 07/01/2024 Modified 01/30/2025 Description In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: hub: Guard against accesses to uninitialized BOS descriptors Many functions in drivers/usb/core/hub.c and drivers/usb/core/hub.h access fields inside udev->bos without checking if it was allocated and initialized. If usb_get_bos_descriptor() fails for whatever reason, udev->bos will be NULL and those accesses will result in a crash: BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000018 PGD 0 P4D 0 Oops: 0000 [#1] PREEMPT SMP NOPTI CPU: 5 PID: 17818 Comm: kworker/5:1 Tainted: G W 5.15.108-18910-gab0e1cb584e1 #1 <HASH:1f9e 1> Hardware name: Google Kindred/Kindred, BIOS Google_Kindred.12672.413.0 02/03/2021 Workqueue: usb_hub_wq hub_event RIP: 0010:hub_port_reset+0x193/0x788 Code: 89 f7 e8 20 f7 15 00 48 8b 43 08 80 b8 96 03 00 00 03 75 36 0f b7 88 92 03 00 00 81 f9 10 03 00 00 72 27 48 8b 80 a8 03 00 00 <48> 83 78 18 00 74 19 48 89 df 48 8b 75 b0 ba 02 00 00 00 4c 89 e9 RSP: 0018:ffffab740c53fcf8 EFLAGS: 00010246 RAX: 0000000000000000 RBX: ffffa1bc5f678000 RCX: 0000000000000310 RDX: fffffffffffffdff RSI: 0000000000000286 RDI: ffffa1be9655b840 RBP: ffffab740c53fd70 R08: 00001b7d5edaa20c R09: ffffffffb005e060 R10: 0000000000000001 R11: 0000000000000000 R12: 0000000000000000 R13: ffffab740c53fd3e R14: 0000000000000032 R15: 0000000000000000 FS: 0000000000000000(0000) GS:ffffa1be96540000(0000) knlGS:0000000000000000 CS: 0010 DS: 0000 ES: 0000 CR0: 0000000080050033 CR2: 0000000000000018 CR3: 000000022e80c005 CR4: 00000000003706e0 Call Trace: hub_event+0x73f/0x156e ? hub_activate+0x5b7/0x68f process_one_work+0x1a2/0x487 worker_thread+0x11a/0x288 kthread+0x13a/0x152 ? process_one_work+0x487/0x487 ? kthread_associate_blkcg+0x70/0x70 ret_from_fork+0x1f/0x30 Fall back to a default behavior if the BOS descriptor isn't accessible and skip all the functionalities that depend on it: LPM support checks, Super Speed capabilitiy checks, U1/U2 states setup.
